When people forget Allah satan makes the most of this opportunity and starts dominating such people. Since such people are already on the wrong path, misleading them further becomes easier for satan.
For eg: when a house lies vacant for long, devils, spirits etc start inhabiting that house. Similarly,when a person becomes forgetful about Allah, satan starts controlling the mind of that person and lures him towards all types of evil deeds.
This is mentioned in the Quran, chapter 43,Al-Zukhruf, verse 36.
وَمَن يَعْشُ عَن ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَانًا فَهُوَ لَهُ قَرِينٌ (43:36)
• 43:36 (Asad) But as for anyone who chooses to remain blind to the remembrance of the Most Gracious, to him We assign an [enduring] evil impulse, to become his other self:
